But team building activities for remote and hybrid teams don’t need to be boring! If designed in the right way taking into account our relational needs as humans, we can transform a mundane experience into something magical!

Hybrid workspaces create challenges to trust and belonging. 

Remote workers are craving connection. Finding ways for hybrid workers to connect should be a priority as this is strongly linked to belonging and wellbeing.

Icebreakers for Virtual Meetings

Another effective way of supporting your high performing teams is during virtual team meetings. The majority of virtual meetings are transactional with little effort or design focused on relational aspects of the team. But if you’re only gathering online as a team once a week, are you not missing an opportunity to inspire, energise and connect your employees?

My recommendation would be to design some time into the agenda for colleagues to connect as, this doesn’t tend to happen spontaneously or organically. We’re talking about creating opportunities for short ‘water-cooler’ moments throughout your meeting. It takes as little as 5 minutes at the start of the meeting or to close the meeting. A virtual icebreaker at the beginning of a meeting is a great way to help people land, get comfortable and re-focus.

And doing something fun at the end of your meeting will help to create a ‘peak’ or positive experience that your team will remember and help to inspire and motivate them in their daily tasks.

Effective Online Team Building Activities

It’s worth remembering that play in business isn’t just frivolous fun. Research shows that play can be hugely beneficial to the productivity and effectiveness of how people work.

As children, we started to play naturally.  We didn’t need an instruction book, we just did it. 

But as we get older, we are made to feel guilty for playing.  We are told to stop messing around, to grow up, to be productive, that’s unprofessional.  We trade play and laughter for work and seriousness.

But Play is a fundamental need of us humans just as we need to eat and sleep.

The truth is, introducing just a little play in our lives can help us become not only happier and joyful but more creative, collaborative and more effective at work.
